Subject: MobileLBSList: Importance of altitude
Date:  08/16/2000 09:01:17 AM
From:  Bryan Morgan

Yesterday, someone mentioned not only x/y positioning, but also "z" -
altitude. I'm trying to understand why you'd need this information...are
you interested in say tracking something on the 15th floor of a building or
are you talking seriously high altitudes (such as aircraft, etc.)?

It seems to me that if you're referring to a building height -- less than
200 meters -- that positioning has a long way to go. If you can locate
something to within 50 meters on the x-y plane, that's okay for most
applications because you can visually access your surroundings (in most
cases). If you're trying to locate something in a building, it gets
complicated....what if you're on the 5th floor but your device (only
accurate to within 50 meters) tells you something may be between the 12th
and 18th floors...obviously, not a workable solution. How is this currently
handled, if at all?
